Privacy Policy for Volume Visualizer

Volume Visualizer (“the app”) is a disk-space analyzer for macOS published by Brent Nicholson (“we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy explains how the app handles your information.
The short version
Volume Visualizer does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any of your data. Everything the app does happens entirely on your Mac. The app ships without any network capability, so it cannot send your files, file names, or any other information anywhere — including to us.
No data collection
We do not collect personal information. The app has no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking technologies, and no third-party data collection SDKs. We do not build profiles, and we have no servers that receive data from the app.
No network access
The app is sandboxed and is distributed without networking entitlements. It has no ability to make outgoing or accept incoming network connections. This is an OS-enforced guarantee, not just a promise: macOS prevents the app from transmitting data off your device.
How the app uses your files
To do its job, the app reads information about the files and folders on the drives you choose to scan — names, sizes, types, and modification dates — and, when you use the duplicate finder, reads file contents in order to compute a fingerprint that identifies identical files. All of this processing happens locally, in memory, on your Mac. None of it is transmitted or stored by us.
- Deletion: When you choose to remove items, the app moves them to the macOS Trash (it does not permanently erase them). You remain in control.
- Importing and exporting scans: If you export a scan or import an
ncdu-format file, those files are read from and written to locations you choose on your own device.
On-device intelligence
The app’s cleanup and exploration suggestions are generated using Apple’s on-device intelligence. The analysis runs locally on your Mac; the file names and sizes used to produce suggestions are not sent to us or to any third party.
Diagnostics and crash reports
The app does not run its own crash-reporting service and does not transmit diagnostics to us. Diagnostic messages are written to the standard macOS logging system on your device. If the app crashes, macOS may collect a crash report; a symbolicated copy is made available to the developer only if you have opted in to sharing diagnostics with developers in your system settings. That sharing is performed by Apple under Apple’s terms, not by the app, and any such reports are technical diagnostics, not personal data we solicit.
Purchases
Volume Visualizer is sold through the Apple App Store. All payments and any related personal or financial information are handled by Apple, not by us. We do not receive your payment details. Apple’s handling of that information is governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Permissions
To scan a drive, the app asks you to select that drive — or a folder within it — using the standard macOS file picker. macOS then grants the app read access only to what you chose, and the app saves a security-scoped bookmark on your Mac so it can re-open the same location on later launches without asking you again. The app does not request Full Disk Access. Any access you grant is used solely to provide the app’s features on your device. You can revoke a drive’s authorization at any time from within the app, and you can review the app’s file access in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Children’s privacy
The app does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Effective date” above and post the updated version at https://volumevisualizer.app.
